AIFF is not willing to renew its monthly contract of elite panel officials.
M Santosh Kumar in an interview with Times Group expressed his frustration being a referee in India. Santosh who won AIFF Best Referee of the Year Award 2015 cannot depend on his football career to earn a living. He does not get a fixed salary from AIFF and has to drive his autorickshaw daily for meeting his and his family needs.
I love football and that’s why I am a referee. But that doesn’t give me any financial security. I have to drive my autorickshaw whenever I am home to take care of my family.
Santosh told TOI
A national referee earns Rs 4,000 as daily allowances in addition to free travel and accommodation for officiating in an I-League game while for an ISL game he earns approximately Rs 10,500 per match.
Earlier, however the match officials used to earn Rs 25-30,000 in addition to the daily allowances for the games they used to officiate. AIFF has decided to do away with the monthly salary, which has made things difficult for the top 4 Indian referees- Pranjal Banerjee, CR Srikrishna, A Rowan and Tejas Nagvenkar.
J Ravishankar, head of referees in India, when asked about this matter was quoted saying
It’s absolutely Federation’s call
