Indian football giants Mohun Bagan ushered in a new era when they officially made the announcement of their merger with three-time Indian Super League (ISL) champions ATK.
The two Kolkata club have come together and will form a new entity that will come into effect from June 1, 2020, and will take part in the ISL 2020-21 season. ATK owner Sanjeev Goenka will own 80 per cent of the new club while Mohun Bagan will have the remaining 20 per cent shares.
The Name Dispute:
The name of the new club would be ATK-Mohun Bagan. Identities of both Mohun Bagan and ATK will remain intactGoenka Said to Times of India
Soon after merger, Goenka said “The name of the new club would be ATK-Mohun Bagan. Identities of both Mohun Bagan and ATK will remain intact”. So, there is a high possibility of the name being ATK-Mohun Bagan with ATK owners Mr Sanjeev Goenka and Utsav Parekh the major stake-holders.
A few emerging reports claim that the club name could be Mohun Bagan-ATK, Mohun Bagan being the face and ATK being the major owners. If they select this name, it would be justified, looking at the business aspect of the merger.
ATK-Mohun Bagan or Mohun Bagan-ATK, whatever the name will be, the new football club will have brand names of both ATK and Mohun Bagan. This move will see the two football clubs coming together into a new merged identity to compete in the rapidly growing professional Indian football landscape.
