Indian Super League side Bengaluru FC won their AFC Cup play-off game against Eagles on Sunday and start their new campaign on a winning note. The Blues will now join ATK Mohun Bagan in Group D of the continental competition.
Italian manager Marco Pezzaiuoli got his team to a winning start in his first two big games as the club’s head coach. He did field an expected playing eleven against Maldives’ club Eagles for an entry into AFC Cup group stage games.
Both teams were looking a bit rusty especially in the first ten minutes of the game. Local side Club Eagles tried to make use of the width and created more opportunities from the wings. However, Bengaluru FC was equal to the task and made good counters.
Former Chennaiyin attacker Jayesh Rane found the net from Sarthak’s long throw-in. Rane sent the ball into the bottom corner to put his side in the lead on his debut game. This solitary goal kept the two sides aside till the end of 90 minutes. Bengaluru FC still needs to work on their defense ahead of big games in Group D.
Bengaluru join ATK Mohun Bagan in Group D
Indian defender Sarthak Golui was shaky at the back along with Costa for Bengaluru FC. Musavu-King was good at ariel tackles and had a decent outing for the Blues. However, the team is yet to find the rhythm under its new head coach. Both Cleiton Silva and Sunil Chhetri couldn’t make much of a difference up front for the Indian side.
Next up, Bengaluru FC will be facing fellow Indian side ATK Mohun Bagan in a Group D clash on Wednesday. The Kolkata side might also have issues in defense with Tiri and Sandesh, not in their squad.
It’ll be an entertaining contest between two strong clubs facing off against each other on a continental stage. Bashundhara Kings (Bangladesh) and Maziya S&RC (Maldives) are the other two clubs in Group D.
