Mohammedan Sporting marked their return to I-League in some style by remaining unbeaten in all their matches in the I League Qualifiers.
They played out a goalless draw versus FC Bengaluru United (FCBU), securing 10 points in their overall campaign, topping the table, thereby registering their place in the I-League 2020-21.
Mohammedan was assured of their place in the next edition of the I-League on October 16th as they defeated the other title contenders, Bhawanipore FC with a 2-0 win. The Black Panther who last played the I-league in 2014, marked their return to the I-league after a gap of seven years.
Heading into the tournament, MDSP made some strong signings bolstering their squad, they even brought in young coach Yan Law, marching into the tournament as favourites. But things since then soured between the club and the coach leading to Yan Law being sacked with two matches left to be played.
Yet, none of what happened off the field reflected on the field, as the players put on solid performances to bag the coveted I-league spot.
Mohammedan will now remain the only team from Kolkata playing in the I-league as both East Bengal and Mohun Bagan head into the ISL this season. The Blank Panthers next aim would be to follow them into the ISL-now the top tier league- either through investors, much like their maidan counterparts, or through the route of promotion.
